ABCs of Team Building

A reader recently wrote to me about a column I penned several years ago, the ABCs of selling. She told me how often she used it and shared it with her colleagues.

Then she challenged me to come up with the ABCs of team-building, a topic that seems particularly popular in this era of reorganizations, layoffs and downsizing. The following concepts are what I consider the fundamentals of team-building:

A   is for action. No team can function without a plan of action, even when the final outcome is to take no action at all.

B is for brainpower. If two heads are better than one, I would submit that a cohesive, well-assembled team should have enough brainpower to attack any project.

How to Overcome the Jitters and not Choke

I recently came across a graduation speech by the valedictorian of a university law school. He began his remarks by acknowledging that he had difficulty deciding what “wisdom” to impart to his fellow graduates. He said he had consulted several quotation books and speaker’s guides but had come away uninspired. He reviewed all the cases of law the class had studied and had found nothing that he felt was appropriate on such an important occasion.

Mackay’s Morals: Column-ending morals provide lessons for life

have been told many times that I could have had a career in fortune cookies instead of envelopes. That’s because I love to come up with those pithy little sayings, fortunes, aphorisms, or as I call them, morals.

Every three or four years I devote one of these columns to my column-ending morals, which I hope provide lessons for business and life. They’re among my most often requested, as many end up on bulletin boards and refrigerators.

Mackay’s Morals

Every week I write around 750 words of business “wisdom” to share with readers across the country. I try to deliver a message that will help others avoid problems, anticipate situations and work smarter. It’s always gratifying to hear from readers that my advice has worked for them.

Perhaps my favorite part of each column is the brief moral I write at the end. Turns out that my hero, Aesop, has a lot of fans out there — those morals are what people remember.

Column-ending morals provide life lessons
